Medea

2007

Choreography: Sasha Waltz.
Grand Theatre de Luxemburg,Luxemburg .

Taking once again material from mythology to create a work for the modern dance ensemble Sasha Waltz & Guests and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Medea, based on Pascal Dusapin’s 1991 opera Medeamatrial, was developed. For the opera, which uses period instruments as the basis for the musical-choreographic confrontation, Sasha Waltz once again incorporates both the dancers and the singers into the action.
The interpretation of the mythological material allowed Sasha Waltz to incorporate all of her artistic talents: the antique world is reflected in frieze-like group formations, using the archaic picture language to integrate the vocabulary of the movements and thereby create narrative references.

A Production by Sasha Waltz and Guests in co-production with Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg as part of Capital of Culture Luxembourg 2007, and Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin.
